Round III of National Smart Green Projects Initiative Launches

by Ahmed Hassaan

The third round of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects has been launched. The initiative is co-implemented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, in collaboration with partners including government institutions, United Nations agencies, private sector companies and civil society organizations.

The primary objective of the initiative is to protect the environment and the rights of future generations, aligning with the national strategy to confront climate change and adopt sustainable development goals as part of Egypt’s Vision 2030. It seeks to contribute to sustainable development by providing homegrown solutions from Egyptian governorates to address environmental impacts and curb climate change. Additionally, the initiative aims to create a governorate-level map of smart green projects to ensure their sustainability and attract the necessary funding.

The initiative targets projects that apply environmental sustainability standards, work to reduce carbon emissions and pollution, conserve natural resources, and improve energy and resource efficiency. Additionally, it focuses on projects that address food security, water security, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and climate change adaptation.

As a key player in the initiative, MCIT sets the selection criteria and organizes sessions in all governorates to introduce investors and entrepreneurs to smart projects, their objectives, and application criteria. Through Creativa Innovation Hubs, the Ministry promotes the initiative among members of the IT community and explains its different categories and terms. MCIT also attracts major ICT companies to support winning projects financially or technically and acts as a jury member evaluating projects at the governorate level.
